Kniphofia | Red Hot Poker. A colorful genus of perennial plants from southern Africa, various Kniphofia species and cultivars bloom with showy spikes of tubular orange, yellow, pink and bi-colored flowers. The plant varies in size from compact to huge. The foliage is grassy in appearance and the flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds. On a trip to South Africa I was awestruck by the sight of hundreds of incandescent flower spikes glowing in the evening light. They were the flowers of kniphofia, the aptly named red hot poker, and on that visit, I saw many more species, some with pale-lemon flowers, some soft pink but most with the vibrant orange with which the plant is most associated. Kniphofia has many aliases; Torch Lily, Tritoma, as well as the common Red Hot Poker, but whatever name you use it elicits comments when it lights up the garden. With good drainage in a sunny location, it is easy to care for, has few pests and diseases that bother it, and is drought tolerant once established. Kniphofia uvaria: One of the species plants in the Kniphofia genus; two-toned flowers with red at the top and yellow at the bottom; grows to 4 feet tall (with flower) and 1 foot wide Kniphofia 'Lady Luck': An unusually tall variety that grows 5 to 5.5 feet tall and 3 to 3.5 feet wide; white flowers The best yellow poker by far, bred by Bakers of Codsall in 1946, this shone in August producing all-yellow plump pokers tipped in darker yellow. (over 4ft/130cm). ‘Sunningdale Yellow’ AGM. Bred in 1968 by Sunningdale Nurseries, this was the last of the yellows to flower with a final flourish in November, although it began in June. (3ft/90cm). Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia Uvaria) - This stately perennial flower is also known as Torch Lily. Kniphofia Torch Lily is native to South Africa, and it provides a dramatic display of multi-colored flower spikes that will reach 36 - 48 inches in height on top of long, dagger like leaves.
Kniphofia 'Mango Popsicle' (Red Hot Poker) Kniphofia 'Mango Popsicle' produces impressive spikes of mango-orange flowers (up to 120 blossoms per spike) from early summer to early fall. Blooming in succession, the flower spikes are borne on stout flowering scapes which rise above a tufted clump of mid green, strap-shaped, evergreen leaves.
